Mindfulness and Education for Everyone
Often it is only the socially and economically privileged who have the opportunity to develop a mindfulness practice. The core mission of Elm Village is to provide mindfulness training to under-served population through the arts, movement, and meditation. By teaching mindfulness, we hope to promote mental health and well-being while decreasing such things as trauma response, recidivism and addiction relapse.
Whatever privilege you may or may not have, it can be challenging to pay attention to what is happening right here, right now. If we are not paying attention, we can get lost in unhelpful habitual patterns or we can react before we've had time to settle and consider prudent courses of action. However, these habits disproportionately affect the disenfranchised. For those who are historically under-served--the homeless, the formerly incarcerated, those struggling with mental health issues, addiction or developmental disabilities--this difficulty in staying rooted in the present moment can have dire consequences. It can lead to relapse, imprisonment, loss of work, loss of housing, or even loss of life. With this in mind, Elm Village, through partnerships with organizations in Greater New Haven, offers volunteer mindfulness instruction to help develop awareness and enrich the lives of those who need it most.

WHETHER IT IS WITH INCARCERATED YOUTH, PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION, THOSE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, OR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED, WE BELIEVE THAT A MINDFULNESS PRACTICE CAN HELP ALLEVIATE THE STRESS AND SUFFERING OF DAY TO DAY LIFE. THEREFORE, WE ARE DEDICATED TO OFFERING MINDFULNESS TO EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO MAY OTHERWISE NEVER HAVE A CHANCE TO DISCOVER IF MEDITATION WOULD SUPPORT THEM IN OVERCOMING THEIR STRUGGLES.
WE ALSO BELIEVE IN FUND-RAISING IN A MANNER THAT FOSTERS INSIGHT AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH. THUS, OUR MAIN MEANS OF SUSTAINING OUR ORGANIZATION IS THROUGH OFFERING LOW-TUITION COURSES ON MINDFULNESS.
WE ARE ALSO DEDICATED TO EVIDENCE BASED RESULTS, USING VALIDATED PUBLIC HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRES TO GAUGE THE EFFICACY OF OUR PROGRAMS.
